Shabby Chic American Buttercream Birthday Cake

I made this birthday cake for my very good friend's mum's birthday, my lovely friend Lauren has always been so supportive of my bakery and I've known her since before I even baked, so even though big cakes aren't really my thing I had to say yes when she asked me to make this for her mum's 50th.

Lauren's only brief was to ice the cake in buttercream and use a pink and gold colour scheme, she insisted further instruction would stunt my creativity (that's art students for you, we went to uni together).

I have been so nervous about this cake! Oh my god ridiculously so, for some reason I find I get more worried about cakes for family and friends, which is ridiculous I know.

I love the roses especially the gold ones and I'm really fond this style of cake, I think it looks like it was made in an old fashioned American bakery.  The cake is a two layer chocolate cake with white chocolate caramel vanilla bean buttercream.

This is one gorgeous cake. We do have most of our birthday cakes with roses. My boys use to like the bright blue ones on their cakes. We still have cakes that look almost as pretty as your.

Thanks, today was a much better day! I love the way you've frosted the cake so smoothly and perfectly! You can't even tell it's buttercream! I'm sure your friend was delighted! and I'm totally with you on being far more nervous baking for friends and family than paying customers!
